Reframe · Solution-first technology
Not every problem needs custom software.
Not every tool deserves its subscription.
Reframe is a structured methodology for technology decisions. We help businesses understand what they have, evaluate what exists, and adopt the right solution — whether that's mature software configured well, an open-source alternative, or something built from scratch.
The problem
Most technology decisions are made by default, not by design.
The problem
Tools adopted, never evaluated
Someone signed up for a trial three years ago. Now it costs $500/mo and nobody questions it.
Custom built where off-the-shelf fits
Teams build internal tools for problems that mature open-source software already solves well.
Vendor lock-in by inertia
Switching feels impossible, so you keep paying — even when the tool no longer fits how you work.
Disconnected systems
Five tools that don't talk to each other. The team builds spreadsheet bridges instead of working.
The methodology
Solution-first. Custom only when it earns its place.
Every technology decision should follow a clear hierarchy. Start with understanding. Evaluate what exists. Configure what works. Customize the gaps. Build only what nothing else can solve.
The Reframe methodology
Understand the problem
Before choosing any tool, define what the business actually needs. Not what's trendy. Not what a competitor uses. What this team needs to do their work.
Evaluate existing solutions
Survey commercial SaaS, open-source tools, and self-hosted options. Most problems have been solved well by someone.
Configure and integrate
Mature software often does 90% of what you need out of the box. Proper configuration and integration closes most gaps.
Customize small gaps
When a tool does most of the job but needs a module, workflow, or integration to fit your specific process.
Build custom
When no existing solution solves the problem well enough, and the business value justifies the investment. This is where product engineering shines.
This isn't about avoiding custom software. Emiote builds products — we believe in custom when it matters. Reframe is about making that decision deliberately, not by default.
In practice
What the hierarchy looks like applied to a real stack.

- 01
Discover
Map every tool your team uses — who uses it, what it costs, and what it actually does for the business.
You get
Complete software inventory with cost breakdown.
- 02
Audit & recommend
Apply the solution-first hierarchy to each tool. Keep, replace, or eliminate — with clear reasoning for every recommendation.
You get
Vendor-neutral recommendation report with alternatives, trade-offs, and savings projection.
- 03
Migrate
Handle data migration from old tools to new ones. No data loss, no surprises.
You get
Clean migration with verified data integrity.
- 04
Deploy & customize
Set up solutions properly — infrastructure, security, integrations, and custom modules where small gaps exist.
You get
Production-ready tools you own and understand.
- 05
Onboard & support
Train your team on the new stack. Documentation, walkthroughs, and optional ongoing support.
You get
A team that actually adopts the new tools.
Deliverables
Clear outputs at every stage.

FAQ
- 01
Is Reframe just about switching to open source?
No. Reframe is a decision methodology, not an OSS migration service. We follow the solution-first hierarchy — evaluate, configure, customize, then build. Sometimes the best answer is keeping your current SaaS.
- 02
What if my current tools are fine?
Then the audit confirms it. That clarity has value — you stop second-guessing and can focus engineering effort where it actually matters.
- 03
Is self-hosted software secure?
Self-hosted can be more secure — your data stays on infrastructure you control. We deploy with proper security: SSL, firewalls, automated backups, monitoring, and regular updates.
- 04
Who maintains the self-hosted tools after setup?
Your choice. We provide documentation and training for self-maintenance, or offer an ongoing support retainer for updates, security patches, and troubleshooting.
- 05
What if the open-source tool doesn't do everything we need?
That's what levels 04 and 05 of the hierarchy are for. If the gap is small, we customize. If no existing tool fits, we build — but deliberately, knowing we've evaluated the alternatives first.
- 06
How much does a Reframe engagement cost?
The audit is a fixed-fee engagement. Implementation is scoped based on recommendations. The savings typically pay for the engagement within a few months — but cost reduction is a side effect, not the primary goal. The goal is the right stack.
- 07
Can you customize the open-source tools?
Yes. This is where Emiote's product engineering depth matters. We build custom modules, integrations, workflows, and UI modifications. The customization is informed by understanding the business problem first — not by adding features for their own sake.
Start with clarity
Know what you have. Know what you need. Know the difference.
A Reframe audit gives you a clear, honest picture of your software stack — what's working, what's costing more than it should, and where better solutions exist. No commitment beyond the audit.
